Synopsis:

The Beard House Fellows Program  (The “Program”)uses the historic James Beard House (the “Beard House”) as a platform for up-and-coming chefs to further their careers by gaining critical skills and engaging in various media opportunities to bring visibility to their name and work. The James Beard Foundation, Inc. (“JBF”) will provide hard skills training in the following areas: publicity and media training, networking, financial and business advice, advocacy education, social media training, and experience in developing culinary products. 

The Chefs selected to participate in the Program (“Fellows”) will work with the Foundation to create and market a meal kit that will be available to consumers across the country. The Program will be guided by an advisory committee of professionals from various segments of the food, beverage, and media industries.  

Each Fellow will receive a stipend of $10,000 to enable their participation in our programming.  


Program Details: 

Each Fellow will have a one-month residence at the Beard House. During their residency they will participate in business, public relations, and financial training, and will be featured in JBF programming and events.  The schedule for the month will be created in collaboration with the Fellow, as often as possible, to ensure the classes are not in conflict with any work or other responsibilities/ obligations.

Curriculum will include: 

  • Financial and Small Business Advice  
  • Legal Business and HR advice  
  • Media training and Branding (for demos and interviews in print, TV, podcasts, IG lives, and other potential forms of media)  
  • Social media training    
  • Food Policy Advocacy training by JBF impact team  
  • Wine Knowledge 
  • Leadership Knowledge


JBF will feature the Beard House Fellow in the following: 

  • A blog post interview 
  • Instagram Post for the Program
  • JBF Virtual event featuring meal kit recipe demo open to JBF members, donors, and general public. 
  • JBF production partners, INTERSPORT, will film and interview each Fellow and create a video series about the Fellows Program in partnership with our presenting sponsor, Capital One. Both JBF and Capital One will share this piece on their channels.
  • Other opportunities - to be determined.
  • The Fellow will develop a meal kit in collaboration with Great Performances, a top NYC-based events and catering firm. The Fellow will participate in a research and development period with Great Performances and their expert team to customize their own meal kit. The meal kit will be promoted for purchase to the general public at the end of the month’s residency. 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for the Beard House Fellows Program, you must: 

  • Be motivated to grow your professional career in the culinary industry 
  • Have a minimum of 3 to 5 years of recent professional paid experience in the culinary industry (You do not need to be currently employed) 
  • Have SSN(Social Security Number) or TIN(Taxpayer Identification Number) for payment of stipend 
  • Have an available residence in the tri-state area during the month of the Program
  • Be a graduate of a Food Education Fund partner high school (Food and Finance High School, High School of Hospitality Management, Brooklyn S.T.E.A.M. Center)
  • Be available to attend a 4-week long program which will consist of virtual and in-person courses and promotions (a minimum of 50 hours over a 4-week time-frame) 
  • Be prepared to be on-camera for possible media interviews, participate and lead a live virtual event, develop a meal kit for public consumption, and work with JBF sponsor products 
  • Submit two professional recommendation letters, a short personal description, a video, and be available for any follow-up interviews as needed
  • Complete this application in full by application close date 
  • Submit proof of a COVID-19 vaccination

Disqualifiers:

  • No previous experience in the culinary industry
